WONDERFUL NEWS FOR SYMMES NATURE TRAIL!!

In June, Symmes Elementary will be receiving close to $5,000 in grant money from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF), a program that's part of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Our grant met their goals of environment issues education and habitat restoration, as well as incorporating local contributions through the generous donations made by a pair of Symmes parents.
The grant will fund teacher training along with something a bit more exciting: 30 7” tablets with GPS, 2 mobile hotspots, and 2 remote cameras with night vision capability. The technology will be used to assist student field investigations focusing on the Nature Trail at Symmes (a nine acre wooded watershed adjacent to Symmes and owned by the district).
These woods have been used by Symmes teachers since the school opened in 1989. For the past few years, however, Steve Reinke, Symmes 2nd grade teacher and 2016 Sycamore Educator of the Year, has led more intensive efforts to rejuvenate the trail and improve its infrastructure through work provided by the students, teachers, parent volunteers, and Eagle Scouts.

Earth Week

We have a lot of fun and educational activities planned for Earth Week, April 18 - April 22.  Earth day is April 22.

We will announce the winner of the poster contest on Tuesday, April 19 during morning announcements.  All of the posters that were submitted for the poster design will be on display outside the library.

We will have a nature trail scavenger hunt for grades 2 - 4.  Students will visit numbered locations and answer Earth Day related questions.

Each student will receive a paper bag from Meijer grocery store to decorate with an earth week related theme.

Mrs. Wuebbolt will conduct a Stream Sweep for 3rd grader sometime during the week, depending on the weather.

Mrs. Matacia will organize a haiku activity for grades 2 - 4.

Our staff will make a "salad in a jar" to celebrate earth week at Symmes!

Every third grader in the district will receive a free tree to take home on Thursday.

Friday, April 22, will be a "Waste-less" lunch day.  Students who participate will receive a stamp for participating.

Friday, April 22, is also spirit day and the staff and children are invited to wear green in celebration of our Earth.

Don't forget to order your Summer Bridge Books!

COLLINS EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

To The Parents of Students at Symmes Elementary:

Symmes Elementary has partnered with Collins Educational Services, to offer you and your children a summer enrichment program, designed to ‘bridge the gap’ between the end of school and the commencement of the new year.  Studies have shown that over the summer up to 70% memory retention of the previous grade’s materials can be lost.  A summer activities workbook will reduce and can eliminate this memory loss.  The workbooks are designed to be completed over the summer, with the student working on only 2 pages per day!  They review from the past grade level and preview the next grade level’s work.  The curriculum-based activities include:  reading, writing, math, science, social studies, fitness.  FREE online companion, offers mobile apps, online games & interactive family fun from P-K through 4-5!

Aligned with Academic Standards!

These Summer Bridge workbooks are available from Pre-K through 8th grade.  They are in full color and cost $14.99.  Tax will not be charged, as orders will go through school.  Please make checks payable to Symmes Elem PTO.

Orders must be received by April 22.  Books will be delivered to Symmes.

Fourth Grade Parent Program

FOURTH GRADE PARENT PROGRAM

Fourth grade parents are invited to a special program on Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 P.M. in Symmes’ Multi-purpose Room.  This is an adult evening designed to introduce you to the fourth grade growth and development curriculum.   Some suggestions for communicating with your child about the changes and challenges he/she will be experiencing in the next few years will be given in a brief presentation that evening by Mrs. Ferron, our school nurse.   You will also have an opportunity to view the videos that your sons and daughters will see in class.
If you have never attended one of these preview nights, we strongly urge you to do so.   Your children will be highly encouraged in class to discuss this subject matter with you.   It will be so much easier for you to share ideas with them, if you know what they have been taught.
