UPDATE ON CHANGES REGARDING SCHOOL SAFETY DRILLS

Dear Symmes Elementary Families,

We wanted to update you on changes that are being required from the state (HB 178) regarding school safety drills.  One major change is the requirement to conduct 3 school safety drills a year. This requires the school district to simulate at least 1 full scale evacuation drill.  We will be conducting this drill on Thursday, Oct. 1st at 9:30 am and will be evacuating the entire building with our local police present.  The other two drills can be simulated and discussed within the school building using the traditional lock down process that we have in place.  In our building we are required to conduct 6 fire drills through out the year and the same number of tornado drills during the specific months in the spring, as in the past.

We wanted to bring this information to your attention as we begin to implement this new procedure and practice these drills more frequently.  It is always our intent to make sure we are as prepared as possible for a crisis to occur and keep our students safe.  Teachers will be talking with children about these drills with an effort to balance the necessity and importance of keeping our young students safe without frightening them.  We appreciate your assistance in talking with your student(s) about the importance of these drills and to have follow up conversations at home.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

FALL PARADE DATE CHANGE!

One of the events that our students and parents always look forward to is our annual fall parade!  This year, due to evening conferences, we have decided to change the parade to Wednesday, Oct. 28th, at 2:30.  We hope families can come and enjoy this fun event! FAMILY FUN NIGHT IS THURSDAY EVENING!!! NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS THIS FRIDAY

September 24....this Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:30, our PTO will sponsor a FREE event for all families!  It's our annual Symmes Family Fun Night!  Please join us for pizza, bingo, snacks, cartoons, story time and more!
We hope to see you there!

Please keep in mind that our students will have NO SCHOOL this Friday, Sept. 25, due to a Professional Development day for our staff.  

Butterfly Night Fun

Many families enjoyed a beautiful evening outside for a picnic at our Butterfly Garden, then enjoyed watching a movie, The Flight of the Butterflies, last Thursday evening.

SYMMES STUDENT DIRECTORY

The Symmes PTO is putting together the annual Symmes Student Directory. Because of some changes in district policy, we are unable to pull information from official school databases. Therefore, we are asking all families that would like to be included in the Symmes Student Directory to complete an informational form on line.

The Directory is a valuable tool for arranging playdates, contacting other parents, call for missing homework assignments, sending birthday party invitations, etc.

Symmes Buddy Bench

Many of you are familiar with our Buddy Benches on the playground. Their purpose is for students to sit on them when they do not have anyone to play with at recess. The goal is that students will notice the child on the Buddy Bench and invite them to play. 

Buddy Benches ARE:

- a way for students to meet new classmates

- express they would like to play with peers

- a last resort for students who cannot find a friend or group to play with

​Buddy Benches ARE NOT:

- a resting place

- a place a child should sit everyday

- managed by playground monitors

Please discuss the Buddy Benches at home with your child. We ask for your partnership in helping your child foster fun and healthy friendships!

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 10) is our first PTO Meeting of the 2015-16 school year.  Please come to see what exciting things PTO has coming up this year!  Meet our new board members and see how you can get involved in your PTO! We will have samples of our Symmes Spirit Wear available for you to purchase!  We always offer FREE babysitting, so come and join us in the Multi-Purpose Room at 9:30!
