News from our Nurse!

If your child has medication in the Nurses Office an adult must pick it up by the last day of the school year. No medication is to be transported by a child.  Medication remaining in the Nurses office past the last day of school must be discarded.  This includes inhalers and Epi-pens.

New medication order forms for next school year can be found on the Sycamore web site.  If your child will again be on medication, the doctor must update all orders.  Please, plan to do this early in the summer, so everything is in place the first day of school.  No medication may be given without a new order each year from the physician.

Thanks and have a healthy and safe summer! Mrs. Ferron

STREP THROAT!!

Across the school district, in the community and here at Symmes we have seen a recent increase in strep throat infections. Mrs. Ferron, our school nurse would like you to know how the illness is spread, signs and symptoms of strep throat and what to do if your child exhibits these symptoms. We continuously remind the children on proper cough and sneeze etiquette but please take the time to review at home as well.  Please contact Nurse Ferron if you have any questions and she would be happy to help you. Her email is ferronj@sycamoreschools.org and phone is 686-1743.

What Causes Strep Throat?
The Streptococcal  bacteria that causes this infection is spread by direct person-to-person contact through droplets of saliva or nasal secretions.  The Streptococci frequently live in the throats of persons who have no symptoms and these individuals are called carriers.  Up to 20% of school children may be carriers without being sick.

What Are the Signs of Illness?
After a 1-5 day waiting period, illness may include:
Oral temperature of 101 degrees-104 degrees (but some people do NOT run fevers)
Sore throat with severe pain on swallowing
A beefy red colored throat
Pus on tonsils
Swollen tonsils and uvula
Swollen glands along the jaw line
Generalized weakness and fatigue
Loss of appetite
Stomach pain
Up to 40% of children have symptoms too mild for diagnosis.  Usually, the fever goes away in
3-5 days, and nearly all symptoms are gone within a week.  Rarely, the bacteria may spread and cause arthritis, heart problems, meningitis, bone infections, or liver problems.

How do I Know if my Child Has Strep?
Just looking at the throat does not always indicate that a strep infection is present. Strep throat may be detected by various tests, most often a throat culture.

What Is the Treatment?
The usual treatment for Strep throat is antibiotic therapy.  Remember!
Bed rest/isolation from others for 24 hours after antibiotic therapy begins are very important.
No child with a diagnosed strep infection should return to school until 24 hours of appropriate antibiotic therapy is complete.  Even then, the child should be without fever and feel strong enough to handle the school day.
You must finish the full prescription and not skip doses, even if your child feels better.
Serious infections of the kidney, liver, and heart can occur if the medicine is stopped before all of the bacteria causing the infection have been killed.
Tissues should be used and quickly thrown away.
Frequent handwashing prevents the spread of infection.
If a sore throat has a lot of pain, swelling and fever the child needs to see a physician.
If the sore throat continues after completing the medication, return to see the physician.
Notify the school nurse if your child has strep throat.

If your child has had repeated strep infections this year, talk with your doctor about repeating a throat culture after the antibiotic treatment. This will verify the strep infection was successfully treated.

SYMMES BOOSTERTHON FUNRUN!!

Parents,
The Symmes Fun Run kicked off today with an exciting Pep Rally, and we are thrilled about this year’s program! The Symmes Fun Run will be about 2 weeks and is powered by the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon. Our Fun Run includes all students in a fun, team building, fitness event while helping our school raise much-needed funds.
This year, our entire school is raising funds to go toward New Technology. Our goal is to raise $15,000, and we need YOUR help!
Here’s how you can support Symmes:
  • Register your student. To log in pledges, please register your child on funrun.com, using our school’s registration code: 469-739. Students receive aFREE GIFT just by having their parent or guardian register them on funrun.com.
  • Reach out to sponsors. Connect with 10 sponsors. You can use social media in the pledging process and even create custom videos—all of this is on funrun.com. Be sure to capture and record each sponsor’s e-mail address. They will also have an easy opportunity to pay for your student’s pledge by credit card online.
  • Ask your child about the BIG WORLD RECESS Character Play of the day! This year’s character theme is BIG WORLD RECESS, a global fitness theme all about playing with more character. Watch the fun videos with your child on funrun.com.
  • Come to the Fun Run on May 13th! All students are invited to participate, regardless of financial participation. Remember, students will be running 30-35 laps, and we would love for you to come out and cheer.
Thank you for supporting our school. We hope to see you next week at the Fun Run!

A message form the PTO

This week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week!
This year, we are traveling to Whoville with a fun Dr. Seuss themed week.  Every day holds something special for the students to do for their teachers and staff at Symmes.

Monday - Sweet sentiments day! Bring in a sweet treat and special note for your teacher.

Tuesday - Top em' off Tuesday!  Bring in supplies to replenish your teacher's stash.

Wednesday - Wacky Wednesday - Bring in a flower (it can be from your yard) to create a beautiful bouquet for your teacher.

Thursday - Tomfoolery Tuesday - Write a silly poem or joke for your teacher.

Friday - Spectacular Spirit Day - wear Sycamore green and gold, rock out your silliest socks and wear your hair crazy.  Show your spirit for your school and staff!  The PTO is hosting a luncheon for our beloved teachers and staff that day too!

The PTO is also collecting new board games to give teachers for their classrooms.  These games are used during indoor recess.  Teachers (and students alike) will be thrilled to get some new games to add to their collection or replace their old, missing pieces games.  Please send in with your students by Wednesday of this week and the PTO will present to the teachers on Thursday.

Any questions?  Contact Marion Messerle (mtmesserle@gmail.com) LaToya Goshen (goshenfamily3@yahoo.com) or Bekah Erck (rbreech18@hotmail.com)

Thank you so much for your help and generosity this week in making our teachers and staff feel as special as we all know that they are!
